Fort Augustus Abbey

Fort Augustus village

The pretty village with its ladder of locks is just a few minutes’ walk from the Abbey and offers a good selection of shops, restaurants, amenities, a visitor centre and museum.

Watch the pleasure boats navigating through Thomas Telford’s flight of locks on the Caledonian canal.

Loch Ness

Home of the legendary Loch Ness Monster, Scotland’s most famous loch.

Stunning scenery, spectacular mountain setting, ever-changing colours throughout the seasons.

The Boys Dormitory has one of the best loch views in the abbey, with a huge arched window framing the view up the loch – a wonderful place to sit with a good novel and watch the light changing on the water!

Cruising Tours

Boat operators in Fort Augustus offer trips along the beautiful shores of Loch Ness.

For the most exhilarating experience, travel the entire length of Loch Ness in a high speed power boat with a knowledgeable guide. Trips are available from Fort Augustus village.

Steam Rail Journey

Always voted one of the world’s great rail journeys, a must for visitors to the Highlands.

The Jacobite steam train runs from Fort William through spectacular scenery and over the world-famous 21-arch viaduct recently featured in the Harry Potter films.

There are also a number of whisky tour operators in Inverness.

Walking & Cycling

There are many wonderful woodland, loch-side and river paths in the area. The 73 mile long Great Glen Way runs through Fort Augustus from Fort William to Inverness and past Ben Nevis, Great Britain’s highest mountain.

Visit the nearby Gorge & 100ft Falls of Foyers, as well as the 100ft Plodda Falls at Glen Affric.

 

Climbing

The highlands offer some of the most exhilarating rock climbing opportunities, with plenty of challenges for any skill level.

Over 35 Munros can be found within an hours drive of the Abbey.

Country Pursuits

A wealth of country pursuits are available in season.

Game or clay pigeon shooting, river or loch fishing, and stalking, all under the expert guidance of local ghillies and stalkers.

Highland Games

Throughout the region during the summer months, you’ll find the local villages hosting their annual games.

Why not try the championship course at Nairn, or enjoy the local course at Fort Augustus.

Aonach Mor offers skiing for all levels, chair lift reach is 1200 mtrs, thirty minutes drive away.

Historic castles

Urquhart Castle is one of the Highlands most iconic castles. The medieval ruin towers over the Great Glen, and is visible from the loch on many of the boat tours.

Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most recognised castles in Scotland, appearing on many shortbread tins and postcards. Its magical position on a small tidal island where three sea lochs meet makes it a magnet for photographers, with amazing lighting in the morning and evening.
